“The world sees a ship cutting through the ocean. A marine engineer sees thousands of
system working together to make that journey possible. ”
When people hear the words MARINE ENGINEERING OR MERCHANT NAVY, they often think of tough side of the ship. They thought working in harsh condition, taking off the responsibility of such engineering marvels on their shoulders. They don’t know engine side is the heart of the ship which make him function during its voyages across the ocean. Behind every successful marine engineer lies years of discipline, learning of ships construction and its working and most important his/her personal growth. For choosing this career takes lot of guts, audacity, daring, cunning as you have heard it many time. From the first day in college, a cadet which just move on from civilian lifestyle realizes that this profession is different from most other. It’s not just selecting a career, but starting of new lifestyle that requires or demands dedication, continuous learning throughout your career and patience.
At 3:00 am , while most of the cities sleeps, the surroundings lie in the silence, streets are lighted upon by streetlamps, somewhere in the middle of the ocean, a ship continues its voyage through harsh waves. Waves crash against the hull, the engine echoes with sound of waves and the machinery which are running down through it making sounds like heart of the system. Deck side sees upper beauty of the ocean, we feels roaring sounds of its , which makes us to feel how powerful power it upholds. The classroom introduces us to the subjects such as thermodynamics, mechanics of machinery , marine diesel engines, electrical and electronics system, refrigeration, boilers , refrigeration etc; These are not just only for academics’ perspective, but it is the core study of ship working system which make vessel alive. Having good knowledge is necessary , because what we study are used in real life working of ship. This engineering is not only about study of pumps, valves, boiler, piping system of different type of fluids flowing through its, steering gears, etc; but to take its responsibility to take care and maintain its efficiency of working throughout the voyage. The lubricating down of valves, flange coupling or every bearing of the entire system is necessary from time to time and inspection of pressure gauge, indicator, alarms and trips. This realization changes the way of thinking of the cadets from the first day onwards as he / she gets enrolled into this new society of world trade.
Workshops , where every engineer learn to drive the machinery, here theory are covert into practical, opening down and resembling it of machinery are done. It told us machinery marvels till date engineer have made and how human society is capable of moulding pieces of metal into something. One of the greatest marvels of these are ships on which we sail. Here, every small mistake of ours becomes a lesson for us, which reminds us that “ EXCELLENCE BUILT THROUGH PRACTICE, NOT PERFECTION.”
One of the greatest strength of marine engineering lies in the teamwork, where every crew members whether they are electricians , deck officers and trainee, ratings all we work together with common objective to safely sail down the ships across the ocean , taking care of own and crew members life. During training we learn that sailing on ships doesn’t requires only knowledge, there will be various critical situation where we requires agility, teamwork, leadership like quality to take a stance in hard times. These type of quality in our personality grooms us as a sunshine person in the society and makes us stand out in every situation.
Life as a cadet is not always easy as people think, as dreaming of be a discipline man or be discipline man makes a lots of difference. There are sleepless nights before examination, hours spent in workshops, assignments, projects and practical assessments. Our life is full of hardships maintaining study, academics, sports, sleep cycle, social life, personal life, etc; its not easy to deal with all these , requires time management but there is always a peer pressure by time it may change into pressure and stress , because there not only our job but there is our family who are waiting for us to be successful and come home safe. Yet these challenges prepare us for the demanding environment on ships, which built us marine engineer different to tackle in critical situation.
Every cadets dreams of stepping on board on ship for the first time to feel the fruit of hardships which he/she has done during training. They know that there is a long way to go but we are motivate towards our ultimate goal to be best marine engineer ever. The ocean becomes a classroom where every voyage teaches us something new. Marine engineering is often heard as a toughest profession because of its work culture but it is one the most rewarding. It offers opportunities to travel to the world, meet different type of people across the globe , meeting with finest engineering marvels , adaptations of different culture perspective to see the world and contribute to the global trade. The sea tests every engineer, it does not reward arrogance; it rewards preparation. Every theory classes, every practical completed and every concept completed brings us one step closer to our dream, becoming capable engineer to most demanding professions.
By sat down on my bench in my classroom, thinking of one day, I will stand in the engine room of a vessel crossing vast oceans . The journey not begins when ship leaves the port for first time, it starts when we first time leave our beautiful home , to be a man of dreams. There are days of classroom, lab, workshops, where countless cadets like us doing work for their dreams to be successful. With these people , there countless memory of up and down days laughing and enjoying each day life together. There is a saying ‘Journey is more important than the destiny so enjoy it.’
“ OUR JOURNEY BEGINS IN THE CLASSROOM, BUT OUR DESTINATION IS THE ENDLESS
HORIZON.”
